Augmented Reality LinkThis old handwoven rug, about 40 years old, is a notable example of rural weavings from the Kalyaei region with an authentic Kurdish design identity, distinguished by an independent and distinctive visual character. Its exact size is 208 × 133 cm and, with an area of 2.77 m², it is a well-proportioned choice for medium-sized spaces. The approximate weight of 12 kg—based on 4 kg per square meter—indicates good density and a structurally solid weave. With a knot density of 30 raj, the rug achieves a strong balance between motif clarity and long-term durability. The composition is fully narrative and animal-driven. A red field is organized around a central Tree of Life, whose trunk and branches are highlighted in light tones (ivory/cream) and extend symmetrically to both sides. On either side of the trunk, two large facing birds (with patterned bodies and elongated tails) appear in a standing, guardian-like posture. Around the branches and within open spaces, smaller birds and scattered vegetal details reinforce a garden-like habitat. In the lower field, animal imagery becomes denser: several clearly marked quadrupeds (resembling deer/gazelles and hunting-ground animals) are shown in motion and confrontation, while a light band at the bottom depicts multiple fish in a linear row. The navy border functions as a storytelling frame: animals and birds repeat in consecutive compartments, interspersed with small floral and boteh motifs that complete the visual rhythm. The all-over layout, dominated by animal imagery, conveys a lively narrative atmosphere rooted in a local worldview—motifs often associated with power, life, and the human relationship with nature. The red field against the navy border creates a deep, warm contrast that enhances the rug’s presence. A wool pile with cotton warp and weft, together with period-typical chemical dyeing, gives this piece a practical, durable structure suitable for long-term use.
