Gabbeh
Gabbeh is a thick, long-pile tribal rug traditionally woven by the Qashqai, Lur, Bakhtiari, and Khamseh nomads in the Zagros Mountains of southwestern Iran, particularly in Fars and Kohgiluyeh & Boyer-Ahmad provinces. Its defining characteristic is its spontaneous, intuitive weaving process, created directly from the weaver's imagination rather than from a drawn pattern. Designs are typically simple and expressive, featuring geometric motifs such as diamonds, squares, and ladder forms, alongside symbolic images of the Tree of Life, animals such as goats, camels, and birds, and occasionally human figures with a childlike charm. Generous open spaces give Gabbeh rugs their distinctive minimalist appearance, making them especially popular in contemporary interiors. Natural wool, madder red, indigo blue, plant-dyed yellow, brown, and camel tones dominate the palette, while subtle color variations (abrash) are considered a hallmark of authenticity. Traditionally woven with hand-spun wool, a thick pile, and an all-wool foundation, modern examples may also feature cotton warps. Most Gabbeh rugs use the symmetrical Turkish knot with a double-weft structure, resulting in exceptionally soft, durable rugs that are ideal for living spaces and bedrooms.
