Heriz

Heris is located in East Azerbaijan Province in northwestern Iran. The Heris weaving tradition also includes rugs produced in the surrounding villages of Goravan, Mehraban, Bakhshayesh, and Qarehjeh. Heris carpets are best known for their large angular central medallions combined with stylized geometric floral motifs. Their designs typically feature a bold geometric medallion with pendants and angular vines and leaves across the field. The design tradition has Turkish-Iranian roots and is also associated with the cultural influence of the Caucasus. Characteristic colors include brick red, indigo blue, navy, cream, along with accents of green, gold, and pink. These rugs are woven with thick wool pile on a cotton foundation, making them exceptionally durable and substantial. They are woven using the symmetrical (Turkish) knot with two wefts, many of which are traditionally dyed blue. The knot density generally ranges from 25 to 35 Raj.
